At that time Kenya was a colony of the British. The poem is a cry of Derek Walcott on the injustices taking place there under British rule. A nationalist uprising by the Kenyans called the Mau Mau uprising against colonialism led to the deaths of almost thirteen thousand people, mostly Kenyans.
Derek Walcott wrote this poem about the inhumanity of man against man.
