Originally named Demetria Guynes, Demi was born in Roswell, New Mexico, on November 11, 1962. Her family life was troubled from the outset, as her biological father walked out before she was born.

Although her mother later remarried, Demi's stepfather had trouble securing steady work and the family moved repeatedly, struggling to make ends meet.

Her life was hit by tragedy when she was 18 when her stepfather died by suicide.

Having dropped out of school early, she briefly made a living as a debt collection agent before modelling opportunities took her to Europe.
